Infused Water Recipes

I recently started infusing fruits, herbs and veggies into my water. I looked up some recipes and tried about 6 or 7 of them. They are refreshing, but not all of them were delicious. So I decided to share 3 of my favorite infused water recipes with you all. But first check out some of the awesome benefits infused water has below.

Benefits:

  • Infused Water helps  prevent headaches, helps clear digestive problems, aids in heartburn prevention, aids in blood sugar regulation, aids in fat loss (due to appetite control) and helps relieve joint pain.

3 Ingredient Banana Bread

Yup, it’s true.

Yes, I’ve got a recipe for you.

Did I mention it’s vegan too?

Yup this is certainly a dream come true.

OK OK, enough of the poetry (it was fun though). Here’s a easy banana bread recipe. It’ll be quick.

You need:

Three ripe bananas, 2 cups of oat flour, and one cup of plant based milk.

Procedure:

Add all the above ingredients and stir until there is a smooth consistency.

Pour mixture into a greased pan and bake.

I put the oven on bake at 180 for 30 minutes, but it wasn’t done so I put it on 360 for 10 more minutes, then back to `180 for 15 minutes. Needless to say, I was experimenting. Soooo… yeah sorry. However, after leaving it out to cool for 30 minutes it was even more delish!

I also added:

honey   walnuts   cinnamon

vanilla extract        nutmeg

Just incase you wanted to get fancy with it.

See, simple.

How to Make Green Juice

Ingredients: Pineapples, green grapes, strawberries, spinach, lemon juice, water and crushed ice.

Honestly you can leave out the strawberries. And I personally think using coconut water instead of water makes it even better.

That’s Not Healthy! (Things We Think Are Healthy, but Actually Aren’t)

I have always been an active person. I played basketball throughout high school, I’ve always had an exercise routine and I’ve tried to maintain a healthy diet. But in reality that healthy diet, wasn’t healthy at all.  Many of us have been blinded by the fat-free, sugar-free and low-fat  products. I used to be a sucker for these labels, I mean really, fat-free sounds like a winner to me. However these whatever-free products are highly processed and usually have some sort of unhealthy ingredient to make up for the sugar or fat that has been eliminated. This is just one thing thats wrong with most of the products sold in grocery stores today. I’m going to layout some other “healthy”, well not-so-healthy items that you might want to stay away from.

Granola Bars/Protein Bars:

Many granola bars/protein bars sold in stores are highly processed, high in sugar, contain refined grains such as rice flour, wheat flakes and crispy rice etc. (a concoction of rice flour, sugar, malt extract and salt) and are high in calories and fat.However, not all granola bars are bad.

granola barsBe sure to look at the nutritional information to choose the best one for you. I go for the KIND brand, their ingredients are simple. You can even make your own at home!

Juices:

I’m not only talking fruit punch and Kool Aid. Juices such as orange juice, apple juice and even the Naked Green Machine are NOT healthy. For example a bottle of the NakedGreen Machine contains 60 grams of sugar. These juices are highly processed and are high in fructose. Fructose makes you fat by the way. I hate to say it, but even juicing naturally can be bad. To make 8oz worth of orange juice you’d have to juice about four whole oranges. It would be best to just eat one orange. I personally use juicing to get my veggies in. Sure I’ll add some fruit but it is always a conservative proportion. juice

Drink water! Add cucumber, lime or lemon if you like. Water is always the best drink to keep you hydrated.

Diet Soda:

Sure it sounds good. Sugar and calorie free, with the satisfying taste of soda. Studies show that drinking diet soda daily is linked to obesity. Yes, you read that right. Drinking two or more of these diet drinks a day can increase your waistline by 500 percent. This is because the artificial sweeteners that replace the sugar can disturb the body’s natural ability to regulate calorie intake. People who consume diet foods are more likely to overeat and crave more.

Trail Mix:

t1I am sad to say this. Very, very sad but trail mix can be unhealthy too. At least the ones that are loaded with candy coated pieces, fried banana chips, yogurt covered raisins etc. Nuts are very high in fat and calories, so when purchasing these mixes be aware of the serving size. Just eating two large handfuls can sometimes be as much as 600 calories. Try making your own trail mix or select a mix that contains just nuts, some dark chocolate, and some dried fruits.

popTip: When making your own trail mix add all natural popcorn. It will take up much of the space, thus reducing the fat and calories that are in your normal trail mix.

Frozen Meals:

Frozen meals may be low in calories, but a lot of times they  are also high in sodium. Plus, these meals tend to lack the nutrients your body so longs for. The lack of nutrition is due to the refined grains that are used instead of whole grains. Your best bet is to simple buy frozen or fresh veggies and meats. Make a healthy meal out of that. It really takes no time.

Nut Butters:

peanutYes nuts contain healthy fats that actually help you keep your weight down. However some nut butter product take out some fat and replace it with sugar and saturated or trans fat. So when picking out your special nut butter be sure to read the ingredients. They should simply say peanuts, or peanuts and salt. All that extra stuff is not healthy.

Canned Foods:

Canned vegetables may contain high levels of sodium, which can put a strain on reaching your fitness goals. High levels of sodium in your system will hold stubborn water weight. With fresh or frozen veggies and fruits you don’t have to worry about consuming the unnecessary sodium.

Canned foods contain an industrial compound called BPA (Bisphenol A). This compound is used to protect the canned food from the metal. However, BPA has been linked to many health risk including cancer, endocrine disorders, and heart disease.

If you do buy canned food be sure to look for low sodium products. Other than that, stick to frozen or fresh veggies.

Frozen Yogurt:

IMG_6223Noooooo! I love frozen yogurt with a passion, but the truth is it contains a large amount of simple sugars that just aren’t good for you. Not to mention the not-so-healthy toppings we tend to pile on. I say eat a conservative amount of froyo, add toppings such as nuts and fruits and call it a day. I’ll be honest with you, I just can’t let this treat go. lol However, there are healthy frozen yo recipes that you can whip up in the comfort of your home.

This healthy journey is not about restricting yourself, it’s about learning what foods will keep your body running to it’s best ability. Natural unprocessed foods are the best way to go, and they taste great. You can do it, you just got to be consistent. Your life will take major change not only physically, but mentally and spiritually as well.

How-to: A Juicing Party

Over the break I had a juicing party.

Juicing Party:  The gathering of friends who juice fresh veggies and fruits together, to make well… JUICE!ad

Sorry, this is not a alcohol related party. Though you can throw some in, I’m not telling. LOL

So this was my first juicing party, and I didn’t really know what to do. However everything turned out beyond great. So for anyone who is interested in throwing a juicing party, here are some of the steps I took to make it happen.

Grocery Shop.

I bought plenty of fruits and veggies. This included 4 Pineapples, 2 Green Apples, 2 Red Apples,  Lemons & Limes, 2 Mangos, Spinach, Kale, Green Grapes, Carrots, 2 Cantaloupes, Strawberries, and Tangerines.

I also bought the ingredients for the healthy snacks/desserts/entree. These foods included: Chicken Kabobs, Skinny Popcorn, Black Bean Chips, Snap Pea Crisps, Healthy Tortilla Chips, Fruit Kabobs, Oatmeal Cookies, and Healthy Brownies.

kjkIt is critical to provide these healthy snacks, desserts and entrees for the guest. Having a juicing party is a fun way to get the people you care about invested in healthy foods. Make sure your snacks are tasty and nutritious. My brother fell in love with my healthy oatmeal cookies and one of my besties loved the Snap Pea Crisp snack.

Provide a beautiful layout.

With the help of a friend, I cut up all the fruits in veggies and made an inviting food layout on my kitchen table. The beautiful colors of all the fruits and veggies provided, built my guest excitement. I also added my healthy snacks to the table.They couldn’t resist. 

Before the juicing started my best friend made chicken and shrimp kabobs. The perfect healthy entree to start of a PARTY.

The juicing begins.

All of my guest filled their cups up with the fruits and veggies they liked and one by one began juicing. It was really fun. So sweet. So simple. So refreshing. Music was definitely booming in the back round while smiles, deep talks and good vibes filled the room.

Time for dessert.

I baked my healthy oatmeal cookies and my bestie Jazz, made some healthy, yet not so healthy brownies. Not a cookie nor brownie was spared.

I encourage you to have a juicing party. Everybody loves good clean fun every now and then : )

I’ve Been a Bad Girl

      I have to be real with you guys. This past weekend I haven’t ate too well. I mean, I’ve been down right dirty to be frank. Donuts, cookies, frozen yogurt galore, and let’s not mention the cheesy mexican cuisine I had for dinner.  It all started at my job (I work at a frozen yogurt spot). We had a new donut in our bakery case and the owner urged me  to try one. So I’m thinking, sure I’ll eat half. That’s when my taste bud turned for the worse. The owner came back and told us we could take the rest home, and let’s just say the donuts didn’t make it out the store. I usually can reframe from the sweet temptation of my job. However, that first bite of that delicious donut had me craving more and more bad foods.

Sugar can be as addicting as some drugs. It gives that same “good feeling”.  In fact, a study shows that intense sweetness can give a greater neurological reward than cocaine. So be careful.  I’ve done some research on how to stop those sugary goodies.

1. Keep a healthy snack around, to stop from picking up a bad one.

2. Stay away from fat-free products. Why? Because most  fat free products contain a lot of sugar. 

3. Chew gum. A study shows that chewing gum reduces sweet cravings.

My dad came to visit me this weekend. Needless to say, that added to my bad eating. Not making any excuses, but it happens. I beat myself over it. Felt really guilty, but then I realized it’s OK. There are times when you slip up, but don’t waste your time focusing on it. Instead  move on and keep striving for your goals. Personally I think it’s OK to eat a little “dirty” on special occasions, but better believe I’m back to eating clean and training mean today!

Oh, and if you’re going to eat bad drink A LOT OF WATER at least.

Can’t Find Anytime to Work Out? The Solution.

I know a lot of people are busy with school, internships, work, and so on. Trust me I know, I have all three. And it is very difficult to find time to work out on a busy schedule. However, there is a very simple solution to this. Just do it! There is a meme that says ” a 1 hour workout is 4 percent of your day. Now, let me be honest here. There are some days where I feel like I can’t push a single hour out. But I learned to break that hour up. For instance, this morning I woke up early and watched a show on Hulu while doing a very intense cardio work out. Which is listed below. Then I was gone from 9AM to 8PM for class and internship. When I came back, I went for a run and workout my legs and core. And now I’m currently writing this blog, and will be studying for a test right after. LOL (bad me) My point is, you make time for the things that are important to you. So, if losing weight, toning up, or just leading a healthy lifestyle is important to you, make it a priority. Just do it. I mean, what’s stopping you?
